Erie County Clerk, Michael P. Kearns, announced today that, effective June 17, 2020, four Erie County Auto Bureau locations will be reopening to the public by appointment only. The facilities slated to reopen are the Southtowns Auto Bureau (located in the Southgate Plaza), the Northtowns Auto Bureau (located in the Sheridan Plaza), the Downtown Auto Bureau (located in the Rath Building) and the Cheektowaga Auto Bureau (located in the Urbandale Plaza).

“I am very excited to be reopening our facilities,” said Kearns. “We have been receiving hundreds of calls the past several weeks and I understand how important these services are to the public. Now that our region has entered Phase 3, we have the blessing from the State to move forward with certain services.”

The Erie County Auto Bureau can conduct most transactions with the exception of learner’s permit testing and CDL permit testing. The NYS Department of Motor Vehicles has not yet provided guidance when testing will become available.

“It’s an exciting time in a person’s life to get their learner’s permit and go for that first driving lesson with family or a friend,” said Kearns. “I know we have people that have been waiting months for this, but until the state gives us the ‘green light’ we cannot conduct permit testing.”

Appointments for Auto Bureau services can be made by visiting www.erie.gov/clerk/reservations. For those customers who do not have access to a computer or internet, they may call (716) 858-7450. Customers are asked to bring their own pens to complete forms.
