Erie County, NY – Erie County Clerk Michael P. Kearns, along with local dignitaries cut the ceremonial red ribbon to mark the Grand Opening of the relocated Auto Bureau at the Highland Plaza, located at 6853 Erie Road in Derby. The branch officially opens to the public on Tuesday, May 3, 2022.

The new facility features a larger customer area to accommodate seating, additional service windows to serve customers more efficiently with protective glass, expanded testing area and convenient parking.

Customers can apply for their driver’s permits and licenses, obtain non-driver identifications, Enhanced or REAL ID compliant documents, register vehicles, turn-in license plates and complete a number of other DMV transactions.  As always, motorists are encouraged to “Renew Local” and patronize the Erie County Auto Bureaus when renewing their vehicle, trailer and motorcycle registrations as well as all classes of driver’s licenses.

“This long-awaited relocation allows us more square footage and offers a more suitable environment for both our customers and our staff,” said Kearns. “It is also a convenient location for our clientele in the Southern Tier to conduct their DMV transactions in person and know that it is completed when they walk out of our office.”

The Auto Bureau is located in the Highland Plaza and will serve motorists in Angola, Derby and Evans, as well as the surrounding areas of Boston, Brant, Eden, and Hamburg. This branch alone is projected to conduct over 35,000 transactions annually. The Auto Bureau division as a whole conducts close to 440,000 transactions every year and generats $9.7 million in revenue. It is one of six current locations operated by the Erie County Clerk’s Office.

Kearns encourages everyone to Renew Local, as 12.75 percent of every transaction generated from the Auto Bureau stays here in Erie County.  In fact, the Erie County Clerk’s office sent $6 million to Erie County in 2021. This is money that is vital in preventing an increase in taxes and goes towards vital programs and services, including much needed road repair throughout the entire county.

“Although appointments are no longer mandatory, they are highly suggested,” said Erie County Clerk Kearns, “We are accepting same and next day appointments, why would you not make an appointment and have your transaction completed in 7-10 minutes versus not reserving your place and sit and wait an undetermined amount of time?” Kearns recommends that everyone make an appointment prior to coming into the Auto Bureau either online at erie.gov/clerk/autobureau or by calling the Clerk’s Appointment Hotline at 716-858-8864. “By securing a reservation, a customer’s wait time is dramatically reduced,” added Kearns.
