Renew Local Prior to April 30th Expiration

Erie County, NY- County Clerk Michael P. Kearns is reminding motorcycle owners to renew their registrations before they are set to expire on April 30th. Motorcycles need to be registered annually and like cars, need to go through a safety inspection every 12 months to be legally registered.

“Renewing your registration is quick and easy through the Erie County Auto Bureau and when you renew local a portion of your registration fee stays here in Erie County,” stated Kearns. “With the arrival of spring we are already seeing many motorcycles on the streets, so I urge motorists and riders to use caution, watch out for each other and share the road safely.”

Rider can renew their registration locally by mail or by scheduling an appointment at erie.gov/clerk/autobureau.

When renewing in person at your scheduled appointment bring the completed registration renewal form from the NYS DMV (New York State Department of Motor Vehicles) along with payment of $17.50 to obtain your registration at that time.

Renew by mail can be done by requesting a postage-paid Renew Local envelope from the Erie County Clerk’s Office at renewlocal.erie.gov or use your own plain envelope addressed to: Erie County Clerk’s Office, 92 Franklin St., Suite 1, Buffalo, NY 14202. Include a check or money order made payable to the “Erie County Clerk” for $17.50 and include your license plate number and phone number in the memo section. Your completed registration renewal form from the NYS DMV must also be included.   

Once processed, a motorcycle registration will be mailed back within 10 business days upon receipt of the renewal form.

Riders cannot renew a registration that is suspended or revoked; is expired for more than a year; or if the motorcycle has not been inspected in the past 12 months. If the registration is expired for more than a year, the owner will have to also provide proof of New York State insurance at their local Auto Bureau. 

“We want to make sure that all riders are street legal by being registered, inspected and having the proper insurance coverage in order to be driven throughout Erie County,” added Kearns.
